Villareal striker Jozy Altidore landed at Humberside Airport at around 10:30am this morning.

Altidore is set to have talks with Hull City on a possible 1 season loan move. At first it was thought Hull was making a £6.5m straight money deal for Jozy although a loan deal is more realistic.

Keep checking talktransfers.net for any updates that may occur.

Hull City are poised to bring in signing’s this week. Stoke Midfielder Olofinjana is the first addition with PB confident more will follow.

Hull have also handed a trial to out of contract Camara who played for Wigan Athletic, and will start tonights friendly game against Bridlington.

Hull have also raised there bid to £3m for Newcastle right-back Habib Beye, the tigers first offer of £2m fell short of Newcastle’s asking price of £5m, but it is understood Newcastle have lowered their expectations to £3m, a fee that Brown & CO could push too.

On the striker front Hull are looking to put a bid on the table for cardiff’s versatile winger and forward Ross Mcormack.

Hull have also approached Villareal star Altidore, the 19 year old is on PB’S wish list, with a season long loan with the option to buy the most likely outcome over a propoased straight money deal signing.

The above is what Hull City fan’s have been waiting for with the transfer news very quiet over the past 8 weeks. As a tigers fan myself, i welcome the news and i hope we can get the contracts signed asap in time for the trip to Chelsea.

Hull City defender Michael Turner is refusing to let his head be turned by reported interest from rival Premier League clubs.

Following a fine debut campaign in England’s top flight last term, the 25-year-old central defender has reportedly caught the eye of both Liverpool and Tottenham.

Although Harry Redknapp has since denied any interest in the player, speculation linking Turner with the KC Stadium exit door continues to linger.

But the former Charlton trainee is refusing to get drawn into the speculation and is instead focused solely on working on his fitness to ensure he is ready for the start of the season.

“I am just concentrating on my training at the moment as I want to get fit for the first game of the season,” Turner said.

“I have heard about one or two things that have been in the paper but I am not really thinking about it to be honest. I am just concentrating on getting fit.”

Reports today are suggesting Hull City midfielder Ian Ashbee has been forced to hang up his boots due to a Knee injury. Ashbee who guided Hull City to the promise land & through the lower leagues will be a sad loss to the tiger nation.

Throughout the first season in the premier league he tried hard, got stuck in to tackles and also scored a couple of goals one of which was against Millwal in the cup at the KC & another against big Sam’s Blackburn Rovers where Hull went down 2-1.

Again we are not 100% sure regarding the credibility of this information, although the source is very sure, and the source comes from a reliable person that is close to the Hull City Headquarters.

The news is expected to be announced later today or tomorrow.

If correct, i would like to pass on my sympathy and thanks to Ian who has surely blessed our hearts over the years.  I wish him well and hope hes on the mend soon.

In light of the transfer news concerning Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano I thought I would do an article on what position they take up and how important it is for Liverpool – but firstly an overview of the position itself…

Most the time we consider the defensive midfielder position as a single position – take Makelele, Keano, Viera e.t.c. But the defensive midfielder role can be split between two players. One of them employed as a deep-lying play-maker there to direct and control play and the other as a more persistent and dogged defensive midfielder there to break up the oppositions play and cover the defence. The deep lying/ defensive midfielder system originates from South America and is used extensively in the Brazilian, Chilean and Argentinean leagues as well as their international teams. Take the Brazilian national team – they use these two defensive players to counter balance their immensely attacking team. Look at two pictures below – from 1998 and 2009.

brazil 4-2-2-2-no2

This shape is perfect for Brazil as it means that the attacking midfielders can really break forward to help the two front men, safe in the knowledge that there are two midfielders maintaining the balance of play. Brazil are famous for their world class attacking midfielder’s and their freedom to roam can really damage the opposition. The two holding midfielders also fill in for Brazil’s flying full backs as the overlap as wingers to supply width in this narrow formation. As I’m sure you know Cafu, R.Carlos and Alves are masters off this – it is all made possible by the two defensive midfielders.

A coach’s view, “The advantage of this system is that the attack can be very variable, particularly if the central midfielders play a bit staggered” - It is an effective attacking formation.

Rafa Benitez has used a slight tweaking of this formation to great effect for Valencia and Liverpool. At Liverpool he has Javier Mascherano to protect his defence and to bulldog the opposition off the ball whereas Xabi Alonso deals with the play making side. He is able to spray a 60 yard pass with pin point accuracy and pick out a killer through ball – he is a very intelligent player. Together they are second to none at controlling the game, and can sit in the midfielder’s hole as cover for advancing full backs. He has also employed this role during his successful tenure at Valencia (See picture below)

Both Xabi and Mascherano form an elite defensive partnership: I have been bemused lately with many blogs questioning who the better defensive midfielder is. They complement each other’s game for Liverpool and it is no wonder why Rafa wants to warn them away from the Europe elites. I personally think they hold the key to next year’s title challenge because they are so important not only for their duties as listed above, but because there presence means Gerrard and Torres are given freedom to roam – which is a scary thought for most teams.

Rafa needs to keep these two key players!
