Liverpool’s Arbeloa On Verge Of Transfer

Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa has passed a medical at Real Madrid and is close to sealing a five-year deal with Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Arbeloa has been linked with a move to The Bernabeu for some time and a statement on the official Liverpool website earlier on Wednesday confirmed the deal, saying: “We have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the transfer of the player, subject to him completing a medical.”

The 26-year-old Spanish International agreed personal terms with his former club and Liverpool have accepted a bid of approx £3.5million (€4m) for the defender.

Real Madrid’s medical chief Carlos Diez told the club’s official website: “He [Arbeloa] has undergone a standard examination and the results of all the tests are very satisfactory.

“He is delighted to be able to play for Real Madrid, which has been his lifelong dream. He’s looking forward to joining his team-mates.”

Arbeloa started his career at Real Madrid, but only played two matches for the first-team before moving to fellow La Liga side Deportivo de La Coruña in July 2006.

He joined Liverpool in January 2007 and became a regular in Rafa Benitez’s side, making a total of 66 Premier League appearances and scoring two goals for Liverpool in his time at the Premiership club.

The move is expected to be completed by the end of the week, with the Spain international signing a five-year contract with the Spanish giants.

He becomes the club’s seventh signing in the summer 2009 transfer window, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol, Alvaro Negredo and Esteban Granero all made transfer moves to Los Galácticos.
